Dogpatch & NW Potrero Hill Green Benefit District
In June 2012, residents of the Dogpatch and Potrero Hill neighborhoods convened with Place Lab, then Build Public, to discuss how they could create a district that would protect, manage, and grow their neighborhood green assets. Together we have pioneered the establishment of the first ever "Green Benefit District" (GBD).
A GBD is a new form of a neighborhood-based property assessment district, voted into existence by property owners, professionally managed by a community-based nonprofit organization, governed by a Board elected directly from the neighborhood, and dedicated to improving the maintenance and development of public green spaces within its boundaries.
GBDs are derived from Business Improvement District (BID) law, but rather than allocating assessment funds to clean and promote shopping districts as is typical of conventional BIDs, GBDs focus their resources on greening established residential neighborhoods. Learn more on the DNWPH GBD website.
